Outplacement
"When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us."
— Alexander Graham Bell
Lay-off, downsizing, right-sizing, position elimination, early retirement…whatever you call it, you are out of a job.
What happened? Company merger or acquisition, plant or facility closure, new boss who wants his/her own team, financial problems in the company?
Does your employer owe you anything when you are out of a job because of a decision by your employer, for whatever reason?
Take the case of Tom K. He spent 17 years with the same company. Helped them grow and prosper. Worked long hours, proudly represented the company, could say in his sleep, "Hi, I'm Tom with the ABC company." Tom's position, along with dozens of others, was eliminated when the company was acquired by a larger organization. Tom is angry and resentful at being discarded so easily. It is like the ending of a marriage, where your partner one day says, "It's over."
Fortunately, Tom's company has a policy to assist laid off workers. He was paid for all of his vacation time, received 17 weeks of salary (one week for every year of employment), and the services of an outplacement firm of his choice.
The goal of the outplacement firm is to assist Tom in using the newest and most effective methods of securing a new job in the shortest time possible. Time is of the essence. The Wall Street Journal cited that a professional person's job search can take one month for each $10,000 in annual income. Tom's compensation was over $80,000 annually. According to the study, that means up to eight months of job search…and the salary continuation from his severance package is just 17 weeks, four months and one week.
If Tom does not want to be "out of pocket" for several months of income, he needs to take advantage of the resources of an outplacement service to:
- update his resume
- find ALL the sources of new opportunities
- get interviews
- learn what's happening in interviews these days and how to prepare
- successfully negotiate a new compensation package, and more.
