Ask the Experts

As posted in the 9/7/2003 Arizona Republic CareerBuilder Ask the Experts Column.

Question:

I'm returning to the job market after being on disability for six years. How can I get employers to look past the employment gap and the disabilitity I had and see me as a productive and capable person:

Linda's Answer:

A little humor works wonders with a touchy subject. You could use the analogy of Lance Armstrong having been slowed down by a disability and then coming back with renewed vigor and fervor.

If you wish to be taken seriously, demonstrate knowledge of current practices in your profession. There is plenty of online information about what is going on in your industry.

The employer's biggest concerns will be: Are you able to perform the duties of the position now? Do you demonstrate enthusiasm and energy? Are you up to date in your knowledge?
