Prepare for past check

"Once you have checked your past, be prepared to talk about the issues before the company discovers them," said Linda Baugh, president of American Career Executives. "Don't bring it up in the first interview, but certainly touch upon it once the process progresses to the offer stage."

"I encourage my candidates to tell (employers)," Baugh said. "Just say 'I would really like to accept your offer and I know that you'll be conducting a background check, Well, in the background check this is what is going to come out.' They are much less likely to hire somebody who hand't told them."
