Consulting lures execs amid sluggish economy

With a sluggish economy, downsized workforces and restless executives leaving their current positions, there is more movement toward consulting work, said Linda Baugh, president of Phoenix-based American Career Executives. "There just aren't enough high-level jobs in the state," Baugh said "The way the economy is right now, there just aren't that many six-figure-plus jobs out there." The lack of jobs also is prompting some mid-career execs to explore consulting as an alternative to traditional options. "A lot of people are shifting from job search to consulting," she said.

The trend is working both ways, with companies shifting to consulting as a temporary fix during the economic slowdown.
