Taking control of lives, careers
But Linda Baugh, a Phoenix careers consultant, sees a common thread among many of the clients who have sought her help since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "People are more focused on taking control of their lives, since they can't control what's going on globally," said Baugh, founder and president of American Career Executives. "It's very comforting to a lot of people that, 'Here's something I can control.'"
Business is up about 15 percent over 90 days ago, and Baugh's staff is busy devising new opportunities for clients. Travel agents are getting help marketing secure trips domestically and around the world, and former high-tech workers are finding jobs with computer security firms and with companies wanting to locate their computer systems off-site.
"Some people are having true epiphanies," she said. "They're saying, 'You know what? You don't know what's going to happen, and I'm going to leave this work that's been drudgery for years.' It came right up to our face that we might not be here tomorrow. People are grabbing hold of their lives instead of ducking for cover."
