New kid on a job block: first class or first strike

After all those months of searching, you finally found your dream job. Now, you have to hang on to it. The first few days on a job are a critical time when your image is formed for your peers and superiors. You can become the up-and-coming star or the flop who can't seem to arrive on time or get anything right.

"You should take the initiative," said Linda Baugh, president of American Career Executives. "Don't wait for them to come to you. Don't just sit and be isolated."

You also want to request a one-on-one meeting with your new supervisor. Although you've gone over your responsibilities and duties during the interview process, you want to clarify them immediately.
