Ask the Experts
As posted in the 8/8/2004 Arizona Republic CareerBuilder Ask the Experts Column.
Question:
I’m looking to relocate to Seattle and haven’t gotten much response from employers there. Are companies reluctant to hire out-of-state applicants? What’s the best way to pursue a job in another city?
Linda’s Answer:
Most employers are not paying to fly candidates in for interviews, much less paying relocations expenses, unless the candidate is in a very high-demand, skill-shortage occupation. If you want an interview, contact employers and let them know when you will be in town. Your level of commitment can be shown by planning job search trips, putting your home on the market and being ready to pay your own relocation expenses. If you are lucky, your new employer may help with relocation expenses.
