College Graduates: What a Difference a Way Makes

written by Linda Baugh

George (not his real name) and his parents invested tens of thousands of dollars in his education. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Happy and hopeful after graduation, George combed the newspapers for job openings in his field. He mailed resumes to each ad that was even close to what he wanted. Employment agencies only offered him temporary jobs. In the meantime, he took a warehouse job to pay his bills. Weeks went by, then months, without one interview. He got a few postcard responses, "We'll keep your resume on file." George kept working in the warehouse.

When George and I met, he was very discouraged.

The way George had been conducting his job search until our meeting had been answering ads, mailing resumes…and waiting.

In the past weeks, the way George is conducting his job search has completely changed. He has implemented a new job search strategy based on information and contacts. Instead of sending resumes and hoping to be called, George has used proactive methods to obtain meetings with employers.

George reported that at one company, a key manager is now taking an active role in helping him with his search. The manager told him, 'I'll introduce you to some of the hiring managers, then, when a position is open they will already know you. Don't worry, we'll get you on board!'

The last time I talked with George he said, "I wish I had been aware of how a job search should really be conducted before wasting so much time and frustration just mailing out resumes. But, better late than never! Everyone has been very helpful and I have an interview next week."
